Transporting oversized and fragile components for the wind energy sector requires precise planning, engineering expertise, and coordinated work at every stage.
AsstrA experts delivered three wind turbine blades with a total weight of 783 tons and a length of 84.5 meters from Aktau (Kazakhstan), through the Port of Baku, to Khizi (Azerbaijan).
The project involved multimodal transportation:
• Marine transport stage: loading the blades onto a specialized vessel in Aktau and shipping them to the Port of Baku.
• Land transport stage: transporting the blades from the port to Khizi using dedicated blade carriers.
The transit time was approximately one month. Every stage of the route accounted for the cargo’s size, weight, fragility, engineering constraints, and the specifics of the local road infrastructure.
"This project was highly complex from both an engineering and logistics perspective. Safe transport required precise placement of the cargo on the vessel and strict adherence to all technical requirements. A special customs regime in Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan demanded accurate coordination and fast document handling. On certain sections between Baku and Khizi, temporary adjustments were made to the road infrastructure: traffic signs and curbs were removed, the roadway was widened, and detours were built. Some of the work was carried out at night to avoid disrupting traffic and to ensure cargo safety," says Nikita Kim, Business Development Manager IPL, AsstrA in Kazakhstan.
"The project required full-cycle logistics management: customs procedures, coordination with partners, and oversight of the transport process in Azerbaijan – from unloading at the port to installation of the blades at the wind farm site. This is one of our large-scale projects," says Emin Isayev, Branch Manager, AsstrA in Azerbaijan.
"The transportation required detailed preparation and non-standard solutions. Documentation was handled with careful consideration of the differences in legislation and procedures between the countries. Our team developed the entire document package from scratch and ensured proper assignment of product codes for customs clearance," says Mehti Jafarov, Sales Specialist, Caucasus Focus Country Division.
Transporting long and fragile blades demanded precise planning and engineering control. AsstrA ensured cargo integrity, compliance with timelines, and safety throughout the process.
The project highlights the growth of Azerbaijan’s wind energy sector and demonstrates that even the largest and most fragile components can be transported safely and efficiently.
