The international logistics group AsstrA has successfully completed a marine transportation project involving wind turbine components for a wind energy facility currently under construction. The AsstrA team managed the entire delivery cycle of oversized equipment, ensuring strict compliance with safety standards, project timelines, and the specific requirements of renewable energy logistics.
The cargo was shipped from several European ports, including Emden (Germany) and the Spanish ports of Castellón and Escombreras. Following the sea leg, the shipment arrived at the Port of Porto Romano in Albania, from where it was transported by road to the construction site. This multimodal solution ensured reliable delivery while minimizing risks associated with the transportation of oversized cargo.
The main cargo consisted of wind turbine blades measuring 77 meters in length and weighing up to 25 tons each. In total, 12 sets (36 blades) were transported on two vessels. The shipment also included 60 tower sections, 12 nacelles, 12 drivetrains, and 12 hubs.
For this project, AsstrA experts developed an optimized logistics solution that balanced delivery schedules, transportation costs, and the specific requirements of oversized project cargo. The use of gearedless vessels, combined with complex port operations, required detailed engineering preparation and continuous control at every stage of the transportation process.
Project preparation took approximately one month and included:
development of engineering plans for cargo stowage and securing; coordination of vessel schedules and port operations; close cooperation with port authorities and shipowners.
“The key challenge of this project was the transportation of large wind turbine blades and their safe loading onto gearedless vessels. We developed securing schemes for each component, carefully planned the loading sequence, weight distribution, and sea transportation conditions. This approach ensured that the equipment was delivered safely and on time,” said Alan Lichtin, OOG/HL Specialist, Industrial Project Logistics Department. “All solutions were designed in line with the client’s requirements and the specific characteristics of the cargo. This is a core principle for AsstrA when handling oversized equipment for wind energy projects.”
The project demonstrates AsstrA’s approach to renewable energy logistics: thorough planning, engineering precision, and end-to-end control ensure the safe and timely delivery of oversized components and equipment for wind power installations.
