Rail Logistics: Key Alternative to Sea and Air Transport in Unstable Conditions

10.03.2026

Rail is becoming increasingly popular due to its stability and lower exposure to external risks compared to sea and air transport.

Rail infrastructure remains reliable and customs processes are efficient, ensuring uninterrupted supply of goods. Amid crises and instability, the Silk Road by Rail continues to be an important strategic transport artery, providing fast and reliable connections between China and Europe. This route is used for both less-than-container-loads (LCL) and full-container-load (FCL) shipments, speeding delivery and minimizing risks.

Advantages of rail transport:

  • Cost-effective for large volumes and long distances
  • Less environmental impact
  • Reliable operation year-round
  • Increased security due to minimal risk of damage and theft
  • High load capacity for heavy and oversized cargo

Restrictions at major airports such as Dubai and Doha are encouraging freight to shift to rail and this process is likely to continue in the near future. Meanwhile, China is experiencing a container shortage due to delays in maritime logistics and a backlog of cargo ahead of the Chinese New Year. Rail freight prices have already increased by USD 600 per 40HC at some stations in China, including Zhengzhou, Xi'an and Wuhan. Further cost increases are expected in March and April.

Due to border congestion and the effects of the Chinese New Year, there are some minor delays in container departures, but the situation should return to normal after March 10. The Middle Corridor route remains accessible, but due to its proximity to Iran, shipping risks via this route remain high.
